All wars are follies, very expensive and very mischievous ones. In my opinion, there never was a good war or a bad peace. When will mankind be convinced and agree to settle their difficulties by arbitration?
After the defeat of the Fire Nation in the last great war of the world, Avatar Aang had hoped that peace and balance could be restored to the world.
However, Aang's dream of such a peace was broken at the peace conference. The Earth King, who had been restored to the throne after the defeat of the Fire Nation, was still incompetent. In the end, his advisors were the ones who hammered out the peace deal. This deal, however, was not something that would restore balance. Instead, the Fire Nation was punished with reparations and payments so severe that if Aang hadn't intervened it would probably have been utterly ruined. While it was moderated to where the Fire Nation was only moderately ruined, the treaty was still highly resented in the Fire Nation.
For the rest of his life Aang would attempt to have the treaty lifted, and balance restored. However, the Earth King's advisors refused to do so. Even the Avatar, it seemed, could not deal with such stubborn fools. Not able to work change at the top, Aang worked within the Fire Nation to help with overcoming the treaty and making them prosperous once again. And in time, the Fire Nation did do so. However, resentment still existed amongst the people, and Fire Lord Zuko was resented for working with Aang with what they thought was backstabbing.
About eighty years after the treaty, Avatar Aang died.He had left a legacy of attempts to bring peace, but the world had worked against him. Ten years before Aang's death, Zuko had been overthrown as Fire Lord, replaced with general who had preached war against the Earth Kingdon; Ashikaga Takauji. In the Earth Kingdom, a new Earth King had risen to the throne, and effectively regained control of Ba-Sing-Se. Sadly, it was another person with a taste for war; Tokugawa Ieyasu.
So, with the leaders of the two most powerful nations ready for war, war soon came. The Fire Nation still had the lead in technology, and had started the war on the offensive. However, the Earth Kingdom, more centralized under Tokugawa, was able to hold off the Fire Nation advance. For the last twelve years the war has been one of bloody attrition. The Water Tribes and revived Air Nomads have so far stayed out of the war, but know that something must be done. That something is the Avatar.
Will the new Avatar be able to stop the war and bring peace to a troubled world? That is up to you all in
