Name: Mikhail Ruslan
Alias: The Organic Alchemist
Age:43
Alchemist: Yes
Group: State Alchemist
Type: Metal (specifically Carbon)
In-Depth:
Appearance: Mikhail is approximately 6 ft tall in height and is of moderate build, preferring muscles that are small and compacted than the large masses that other alchemist (especially Major Armstrong) use. His hair is black and messy, but relatively short. His face shows his age as it is rough with wear and tear that comes from being a soldier. He wears the standard uniform of the state alchemist, consisting of blue dress pants, shirt (with long tails), and black boots. The reason for always wearing it, though, is to keep his automail leg from being shown. This leg has also caused him to walk with a limp, hence his cane made of carbon-steel.
Personality: Mikhail is rather gruff acting towards people. Never one for manners or bureaucracy, he prefers to do things his way than whatever someone else tells him to do. His years in the military has made him rather cynical, believing that everyone is only interested in themselves and are willing to do anything to get what they want. This has caused him to think very poorly of people and the world in general, and he rarely says anything good about a person outside of combat skills.
However, he hasn’t given up complete hope in people, and has been found to be quite glad when his worldview is proven wrong. And in a strange way, he also proves his view wrong. While he’ll do it in a rather rough and rude manner, Mikhail will help someone who asks for it.
One thing that he has picked up over his years is a severe dislike of ignorance. His fighting in Ishbal War, and seeing the suffering of their people, has made him a bit edgy around people wishing ill on them. He’s very quick to snap at people like that, although he rarely gets violent about it. This is mostly because he considers it a waste of energy beating such people down as well as a general dislike of fighting.
When it comes to women, Mikhail is rather aloof. He doesn’t try to actively impress them, nor does he even actively try and woo them. He’ll be a bit more pleasant to them, but that’s about it. Any girl trying to get to him will end up having to fight an uphill battle.
History: Mikhail was born in Central around the year 1867. Both of his parents were members of the military, though neither of them were alchemist. Instead, they worked the basic stuff such as communications and various other tasks. As a child he was a rather happy person, and enjoyed playing around the office when he was taken to work. It was on one of those days that Mikhail decided he wanted to be an alchemist. He had wandered around to one of the examination rooms for State Alchemist. As he opened the door, he was greeted by the sight of abundant energy floating around as a man began to pull a weapon literally right out of the ground. It was an inspiring sight, and he began to nag his parents for an alchemy teacher.
He showed some competent skill in alchemy as a child, but for the most part it was never anything that great. He could pull of the basics without a problem, but some of the more complex parts were more frustrating. Most of the time his ‘homework’ projects would come out deformed in shape somehow. Eventually he got the hang of it, but he never excelled at the art as a child. It would take until his teenage years before he found his niche; carbon. As a central element in life, there was plenty of it to practice with. And with research into medicine and other organic sciences being improved every day, there was plenty of things for him to work on. It was because of this interest in organic alchemy that, when he joined the military as a State Alchemist, his was give the name the “Organic Alchemist.”
Mikhail’s service for the next 8 years remained relatively uneventful. He was assigned mostly in research and development, and found it to not be as exciting as he thought. He wished to be using his skills for more, what he assumed to be that was, practical skills such as combat. Upon the breakout of the Ishbal rebellion he knew some action would arrive, and that he was going to be a part of it. Sadly, that action would arise as him being involved in the Ishbal Massacre, and this event would leave him scarred for life. He served mostly in a supporting role, and was responsible for cleaning up the mess of the alchemist that had been sent ahead. This meant he had to go through the ruins of villages and towns, witnessing the bodies of dead Ishballians as well as encounters with any survivors.
While he was supposed to eliminate them, Mikhail chose to let them escape. However, not all of the citizens of Ishbal were so thankful for this. While understandable, their hatred of the State Alchemists caused Mikhail to become involved in many fights and ambushes. It was during these events that he received his automail leg. During a routine patrol he stepped onto a makeshift explosive left by Ishbal rebels, and in the resulting explosion his leg was damaged beyond repair. He was forced to receive an automail leg, and was soon brought back to central as it prevented him from fighting in the field.
Over the next 12 years he began to grow gruff and cynical, disgusted with the corruption and what he viewed as hypocrisy of the military. While there were a few good men in it, most of them acted as if they had no conscious. And upon hearing of military experiments endangering the lives of people he decided that the military had gone ‘rogue.’ He could not quit it, however, as it was the only life he knew. Besides, someone had to stay within it to try and improve conditions within. In order to do this, however, he had become much more renegade in his dealings with the military, preferring to ignore orders or to twist them into something to support his actions. It is believed that if it wasn’t for his alchemy skills he would have been discharged long ago.
